About this event

  • 4 days 3 hours

Inspired by the Impressionist tradition of painting outdoors, children will explore the beauty of Front Royal as they learn to capture its essence on canvas. Young artists will set up easels along scenic Main Street to capture the urban landscape of the buildings and the verdant green of the summer trees. They will learn to observe their surroundings closely, capturing the play of light, color, and shadow in their artwork. Children will experiment with Plein Air techniques, easels, and work with a variety of media to find their preferences. As they immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and textures of Main Street, participants will not only develop their artistic skills but also cultivate a deeper connection to the environment and an appreciation for the beauty of their town around them.

Creativity takes center stage as children explore their artistic instincts without the confines of step-by-step instructions. Each session begins with a skill building exercise and open-ended prompt or theme, sparking the imagination and setting the stage for boundless exploration. Through a variety of materials such as paint, clay, paper, ephemera, and found objects, students are encouraged to experiment freely, discovering new techniques and expressing their unique perspectives along the way. Emphasis is placed on brainstorming, planning, and follow through so children cultivate not only their artistic skills but also their confidence, project management, and executive function skills. Guided by the principles of curiosity, self-discovery, and art theory, young artists learn to trust their instincts and embrace the journey of creation, celebrating the beauty of imperfection and the joy of artistic exploration.
