PAC·LA Visit to Pomona and Claremont

Join PAC·LA for a full day visit to Claremont and Pomona to visit three exhibitions created as part of the Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. Our day will be led by our friend Clare Kunny of ArtMuse.

This trip is limited to 26 attendees. Cost is $125 per person (includes lunch, bus, and guide). Nonrefundable after September 15.

Itinerary as follows (subject to change).

• 9:30am depart from park & ride lot (near Universal City) at Cauhenga/Lankershim

• 10:30am arrive at Scripps College, Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery for a private tour with Mary MacNaughton "Revolution & Ritual: The Photographs of Sara Castrejon, G. Iturbide, Titiana Parcero"

• 12pm arrive at Pomona College Museum of Art for private tour with Kathleen Howe "Prometheus 2017" (view the mural in the dining hall, and the exhibition of 4 female artists responding to Orozco's mural)

• 1:15pm lunch in Pomona

• 3:15pm arrive at East LA College, Vincent Price Museum for a private tour with Pilar Tompkins “Laura Aguilar: Show and Tell”

• 4:15pm depart for car park at Cauhenga/Lankershim

War, indigenous cultures and inner transformation ferment in Revolution and Ritual: The Photographs of Sara Castrejón, Graciela Iturbide and Tatiana Parcero, at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery of Scripps College. By bringing their work into conversation, Revolution and Ritual invites readers to consider how photography has been transformed over the past century in Mexico and how it continues to respond to artists’ interest in representing present and past, self and other. The exhibit draws on Scripps College’s academic strength in feminist and gender studies and the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery’s expanding photography collection, with its special emphasis on women who have shaped the photographic field.

“Prometheus 2017: Four Artists from Mexico Revisit Orozco” showcases José Clemente Orozco’s mural Prometheus (1930) on the Pomona College campus and examines the multiple ways Orozco’s vision resonates with four artists working in Mexico today. Isa Carrillo, Adela Goldbard, Rita Ponce de León, and Naomi Rincón-Gallardo share Orozco’s interest in the relationships among history, justice, power, social protest, and storytelling, yet approach these topics from their own twenty-first-century sensibilities. These artists activate Orozco’s mural by reinvigorating Prometheus for a contemporary audience.

The Vincent Price Art Museum will present the first comprehensive retrospective of photographer Laura Aguilar, shedding new light on a Los Angeles-based artist who has garnered significant critical attention for her contributions to performative, feminist, and queer art. With approximately 95 photographs, as well as examples of Aguilar’s work in video, the exhibition will span more than three decades of the artist’s career. Show and Tell will highlight themes of class, literacy, and the body in Aguilar’s work and will demonstrate how these themes challenge prevailing notions of beauty, gender or sexuality, and cultural or ethnic identities. The presentation of Aguilar’s retrospective at the Vincent Price Art Museum is particularly fitting, since she is an alumna of the East Los Angeles College, where she studied photography.
