Training Description: Although CBT has been found, through rigorous research, to have the most evidence for effectively treating childhood depression, many clinicians have found that it does not necessarily translate from the research lab to the real world conditions that they face in community-based settings. Often, clients have multiple presenting problems and complex backgrounds and needs that require a more flexible approach to treatment. This training will present a practical approach to adapting CBT in a way that both respects the empirical evidence AND the values, needs, and preferences of the children and families you work with. We will cover the Transdiagnostic approach to treating children, where underlying core processes are identified and targeted, in order to more effectively treat our clients with co-morbid conditions, such as anxiety and trauma. We will discuss assessment, case conceptualization, treatment planning and core interventions including Safety Planning, Behavioral Activation, Changing Cognitions, Affect Regulation, Social Skills Training, Problem Solving, Family Interventions and Relapse Prevention from a Modular CBT lens.

The Trainer: Christine Frazita is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has over 30 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents and adults. After graduating from UC Berkeley in 1984, she began practicing case management and individual, family and group therapy in agencies such as Children’s Protective Services, the Parent-Infant Center in San Francisco, Edgewood Children’s Center, Children’s Hospital Oakland, Kaiser Psychiatry, San Francisco’s Parent’s Place, and California Pacific Medical Center. Over the last 15 years, Christine has been in private practice in San Francisco, practicing psychotherapy, supervising interns and residents, and mentoring and training therapists in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness-based Stress Resilience. She also trains parents, teachers, health practitioners, and other community members in becoming more resilient to personal and occupational stress. Christine remains incredibly enthusiastic about the science and art of psychotherapy, and loves sharing the foundations of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with clinicians from all theoretical orientations.

Training objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe the difference between evidence based treatment and evidence base practice

2. Name and Explain at least 4 components of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

3. Identify at least 3 underlying core processes that maintain symptoms for children and youth where co-morbid conditions are present (such as depression with anxiety and PTSD)

4. Give examples of at least 4 CBT skill modules that can be used to support a reduction in child and adolescent depression

CEUs: Training meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Family Paths is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (Provider #62239) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. Family Paths’ vision is a safe home for every child. Our mission is to build the skills, knowledge, and support for stronger families in the Bay Area with respect, integrity, compassion, and hope. Founded in 1972, we were started for parents by parents as a volunteer-run hotline providing stressed caregivers with someone to talk to when they needed support to prevent child abuse. Since then, we have expanded to become a multi-pronged mental health and family support agency, serving extremely low-income families, foster families, fathers, mothers, relative caregivers and LGBTQ+ families. We strengthen family relationships by providing mental health treatment and supportive services as well as specialized and evidence-based parent education, trauma-informed counseling, and for providing child abuse treatment, prevention, and intervention.

Services include Parent Education classes, CalWORKs case management, therapeutic and employment services, and mental health services to children and their families who are victims of abuse, at risk of child abuse or have experienced trauma. Our toll-free 24-Hour Parenting Stress Helpline, staffed in English and Spanish and with access to more translation services, provides confidential counseling and hosts one of the largest referrals and resource databases in Northern California, with nearly 900 community resources.
