Courtenay Elementary Community School Society was established in September 2018 and is the community school society serving Courtenay Elementary and the community around it. Our mission is to collaborate with the school and the community to provide and engage in healthy living for children and families through care for self, care for others, and care for the world.

Free overdose response & hands-on Naloxone training workshop

British Columbia is in the midst of an unprecedented opioid emergency. The provincial government has reported that more than <a href="https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2022PSSG0069-001656" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">1,600 lives have been lost</a> to illicit drugs in the first nine months of 2022.Experts have even encouraged the public to carry a Naloxone kit because it can save a life. But what is a Naloxone kit? What is inside? How do you use it?If you are interested in harm reduction, this free workshop is for you. It will cover:<ul><li>What is harm reduction &amp; how do we practice empathy within our communities</li><li> Why the local street supply is so dangerous </li><li>What are Opioids, Stimulants, Benzos</li><li>Testing, prevention, local services</li><li> Stigma &amp; language around substance use disorder</li><li> OD response/ signs of different toxic poisoning events</li><li> How to call 911/ the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act- advocacy</li><li> Hands-on, step-by-step demo of how to administer Naloxone by intramuscular injection</li><li> Includes a free take home Naloxone kit</li></ul>This workshop is open to the community and will be facilitated by Christina Armstrong from AVI Health and Community Services.<a href="http://avi.org/our-services/comox-valley" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AVI Health and Community Services</a> is a non-for-profit organization that provides education and prevention information to schools, the broader community and populations at increased risk of contracting HIV and/or hepatitis C. Their mission is to promote health, dignity, and well-being for all people affected by HIV, HCV, and substance use by delivering sex-positive and harm reduction based education, prevention, and support services.
