Outside City Limits

Forget the commute. Turn the car around! Leave civilization behind and delight in the fused-glass landscapes of Linda Gerrard and wander through the threaded tree paintings of Michelle L. Purvis instead.

Michelle’s lifelong fascination with trees, mountains, and how they relate to humans strongly influences her art. In this series of framed acrylic paintings on paper, each work is a portrait of a specific tree, dressed in embroidered finery to fit its personality. She made their acquaintance and sketched them from life while she was camping or on vacation.

While they may have been created completely in her studio, Linda’s fused-glass landscapes evoke a real sense of natural place. Starting with a base sheet of glass, she builds her images by arranging and kiln-firing layer after layer of colored glass, often leaving lovely textured details on the surface.

Linda and Michelle, two long-time members of Alberta Street Gallery, invite you to take in the vistas of meadow, marsh and mountainside, to reach out to stroke the colorful bark of the trees or a heron’s plumage, and to discover what lies just Outside City Limits.
