Description

Out of the Shadows: Exposing Workplace Sexual Violence Against Farmworker Women and other Low-paid Women Workers

Join us during National Farmworker Awareness Week for a briefing on sexual harassment against farmworker women hosted by Justice for Migrant Women with Congressman Joseph Kennedy and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as the honorary co-hosts. This event will include members of Congress, Justice for Migrant Women’s Founder & President, Mónica Ramírez, farmworker leader and RFK Human Rights Award recipient, Librada Paz, and Maria, a farmworker woman who is a member of the United Farm Workers and a survivor of workplace sexual harassment, among others. Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, Casa de Esperanza, Equal Rights Advocates, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, Futures Without Violence and other partners will also be supporting this critical event.

Farmworker women across our nation face rampant sexual violence with little recourse. Despite the recent attention made possible because of Tarana Burke's #MeToo Movement, much work remains to bring farmworker women’s experiences fully into public view so that we can address and end this terrible problem. It is not uncommon for farmworker women to hold multiple jobs in other low-paying industries, like domestic work and in restaurants, to make ends meet. Too often, they confront similar harm in these jobs. This briefing will shed light on this issue and some of the work that is being done to address it.

This event will take place during National Farmworker Awareness Week and is considered an official Bandana Project event. Learn more about the Bandana Project at www.justice4women.org.
