About this event

The convening “Our Chance to Play” is a multi-university gathering on Saturday, April 27, 2024, on the topic of Gaming and Race, including Representation, Design, and Building Community. Speakers are drawn from across the DMV and the country. This hybrid event will be primarily in person at the AU Game Center with some portions streamed live on Zoom (please register for either Zoom or in-person lunch). The event is free. The in-person version includes networking over your initiatives, a chance to connect with the speakers, and more. A policy report on findings and next steps will be published afterward.

AGENDA (draft):

* 9:45am - Open doors, coffee available

* 10am: Welcome, Andy Phelps (Director of the AU Game Center), with fellow organizers Steven Dashiell (Research Affiliate/AU School of Communication), and Benjamin Stokes (Assoc. Prof/SOC)

* 10:15: PANEL 1 - Gaming and Representation. Speakers include Steven Dashiell of Morgan State, Vania McBean of University of Maryland, Amanda Phillips of Georgetown University, Chelsea Casarrubias of Morgan State University, and Jess Kung of NPR's Code Switch

* 11:30: KEYNOTE - State of the Field by Lindsay Grace, University of Miami

* 11:45: LUNCH with regional networking (for those in person only), plus reporting out on local research and initiatives (open floor)

* 12:45: PANEL 2 - Design and Representation, Speakers include Andy Phelps of American University, Lindsay Grace of University of Miami, Mia Consalvo of Concordia University, Roger Altizer of the University of Utah, and W. Michelle Harris of Rochester Institute of Technology

* 2:15: PANEL 3 - Community Building, Education and Open Floor. Speakers include Benjamin Stokes of American University, Boris Willis of George Mason University and Che Rose of TagLabs/IDEA Public Charter School, plus open floor to the community

* 3:30: CLOSING - Summary of next steps for policy report, and exit by 4pm
