OTHELLO

The National Women's Theatre Festival (WTF) is a group of artists who seek to address gender parity, diversity, & inclusion in the theatre community. While we began as a women specific group of creators, we have realized and recognized that in order to truly work for and achieve gender parity, we must be committed to representing all historically excluded genders. Our name reflects our original intent, but we are committed to more than just cis women. We are committed to any theatre artist who does not feel their gender has been equitably represented either on stage or off in a traditional theatre space. We welcome you, we want to hear your story, and we want to see you on our stage.

Women's Theatre Festival presents a virtual production of OTHELLO by William Shakespeare in a modern verse translation by Mfoniso Udofia

OTHELLOby William Shakespearetranslated by Mfoniso Udofiadirected by JaMeeka HollowayOTHELLO will be presented as a virtual livestream theatrical production.All tickets to OTHELLO are Pay What You Can. We want the participation in this work to be available to ALL, no matter their economic reality. We also believe in radical transparency between all economic participants in our work. When electing how much you are able to pay for this experience, we invite you to consider the following:<ul><li>We must earn $7500 in ticket sales to make payroll on this project.</li><li>Any ticket sales in excess of $7500 will be split as an equal Share among every member of the production team.</li><li>A standard General Admission ticket to the theatre averages $20.</li><li>If we relied solely on ticket sales to fund our production, we'd need to sell $40,000.</li></ul>OTHELLO is sponsored by Play On Shakespeare with additional support provided by the Hitz Foundation. This program is funded in part by the City of Raleigh based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission. Women's Theatre Festival is supported by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County &amp; by the North Carolina Arts Council.About OTHELLO: Set in a modern-day Elite All Women’s Academic Collegiate Institution. Despite the implications of systemic racism in the institution, the brilliant Othello excels both academically and socially. Her success triggers envy and unearths the covert racism of her colleagues and her close friend and “ally”, Iago, who sets in motion a vile scheme to sabotage and destroy her.Content Warnings: Instances of racialized violence; racially-charged language; mental, psychological, and stylized physical violence; domestic violence; jump scare (charging at the screen); alcoholism; addiction; and recovery.Accessibility: All performances of OTHELLO will be open-captioned.
