OSDE is hosting a student data privacy and security workshop for school districts featuring speakers from the  USDE Privacy Policy Office.

<p>The workshop will focus on student data privacy and security, featuring a speaker from the Privacy Technical Assistance Center, U.S. Department of Education. It will cover key topics, including best practices for protecting student data, compliance with the federal FERPA privacy law, and effective data breach response, among other data privacy-related topics. Attendees will gain valuable insights and practical strategies to help protect student data from unauthorized access and use.</p>

Agenda

This presentation will review the basics of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and delve into common scenarios faced by districts. It is intended for anyone who works with personally identifiable student data on a daily basis, from the classroom teacher level to the district superintendent. This session will improve understanding of FERPA and the context for the law and reduce misconceptions & misunderstandings about FERPA.

This session highlights the basics of data sharing under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), with a focus on the FERPA exceptions under which data may be shared, the expectations regarding the security and privacy of education data, and data sharing best practices and requirements for complying with FERPA. As an outcome of this session, participants will gain enhanced clarity surrounding what data can and cannot be shared under FERPA and improve their knowledge of resources available to help ensure compliance with FERPA regulations.

This session will provide training on current data security best practices for education data systems, including user privacy and security awareness, privacy and security program development. It will address ways in which schools are vulnerable and common security failures seen in districts.

Data Security Best Practices

In order to manage data “Faithfully” some student data must be retained and others deleted. Neither the law nor best practices allow you to treat data “Any Way You Want It.” At some point in the data life cycle, you must go your “Separate Ways.” This session covers the data life cycle, including data retention and deletion requirements under FERPA, and managing third parties when they hold students’ data.

Data Destruction and Retention

This session will provide training on current data security best practices for education data systems, including user privacy and security awareness, privacy and security program development. It will address ways in which schools are vulnerable and common security failures seen in districts. This session will be tailored to IT and admin.

Incident Response Best Practices

This is an open opportunity for PTAC expert to meet in an informal setting with state and regional school district and technology leadership to discuss K-12 privacy and data security questions and offer individual counseling regarding the privacy and security challenges districts are facing.
