Oxycodone is prescribed for severe pain. It is a combination of Codiene (narcotic), and Tylenol. The Tylenol works together to make a lower dose of Codiene effective. The usual ratio is 5mg. Codiene to 325 mg. Tylenol. In nursing we use a pain scale to determine what kind of pain relief will work best. If. Zero is no pain. 10 is the worst pain you have ever experienced. 1–3 can be treated with Ice or heat, sometimes a topical like a menthol rub. Or Tylenol. A headache or achey muscles are examples, or arthritis . 4–6 and you probably want the Tylenol. It may not be as effective at 6 though. Examples might be post surgery pain or from a broken bone. When pain gets higher than 6, Tylenol will not touch the pain. That is when oxycodone would be prescribed. Pain higher than 8 would need morphine or fentanyl. Pain from cancer or other terminal illness would fit in this range. Keep in mind that pain is subjective. What to me might be an annoying thing like a headache, might feel more intense to you. For people who cannot verbalize their pain we have other pain scales that look at behavior such as grimacing, holding the painful area, elevated pulse or blood pressure etc. we use scales for babies, for people with dementia, or in a coma.
