Join myself and Dr. Katarzyna Shaffie in our evening discussion on the importance of oral health and the oral microbiome.

How can bleeding or swollen gums, or a sore tongue contribute to our overall health condition?

A paper entitled –‘ The oral microbiome: Role of key organisms and complex networks in oral health and disease’ published in 2021 states:

‘The influence of the oral microbiota is not confined to this location. Oral cavityassociated microbes have been detected in many distant organ sites, including the small intestines, lungs, heart, placenta, and brain. Many associations between oral microbes, specifically those implicated in periodontal disease, and other common chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure, have been established …..early research demonstrates that oral cavityassociated microbes can influence immune responses and disease pathogenesis outside the oral cavity …. These data suggest that the oral microbiome may serve as a reservoir for pathobionts that can either contribute to or exacerbate disease at remote body niches or organ systems’.

From research we can clearly see how important it is to be looking after our oral health.

THE ORAL MICROBIOTA

Your oral microbiota includes several hundred to several thousand diverse species. It is a normal part of the oral cavity and has an important function to protect against colonisation of extrinsic bacteria which could affect our systemic health.

Certain lifestyle influences drive disruptions, such as a high sugar diet, smoking and stress can potentially alter this balance. These changes might favour the presence of specific microorganisms.

We aim to help you to recognise and address any oral health problems. Once we understand the potential consequences of poor gum health we can work towards restoring balance which will contribute to your overall well-being.

We will cover:

- Oral microbiome testing
