About Joe Westerlund

Under his own name, Joe Westerlund has emerged as an intuitive improviser and composer during the last decade, scoring deep meditative practice over the course of three full-length solo records. After all, Westerlund—a longtime student of Milford Graves—has now spent more than a quarter-century gleaning lessons from folk musicians and avant-garde icons, from close friends and challenging strangers alike. He served as the dynamic backbone of Megafaun, the North Carolina trio that he cofounded, and initiated collaborations with Arnold Dreyblatt, On Fillmore and Justin Vernon. As a session drummer, he has worked as the pulse beneath the plaintive Americana of Watchhouse, Daughter of Swords, and Jake Xerxes Fussell and has been a textural anchor for the folk abstraction of Califone. Currently, he tours and records primarily in an improvisational trio, Setting (with Jaime Fennelly and Nathan Bowles), as a duo with trumpeter Trever Hagen, and as a solo artist on Psychic Hotline.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I park?

Paid parking is available across the street at the Metra parking. Free parking is available on some of the surrounding streets (e.g. W. Thorndale), directly in front of ESS, and in the alley directly south of us. When parking in front of ESS, please leave space between the building and your vehicle.

Is there Accessible Parking?

Behind ESS through the alley, there are two parking spots which we are happy to reserve for anyone with accessibility needs who is attending a show in the garden. Please contact info@ess.org to reserve a spot.

Are the building entrances accessible?

Yes: From the Ravenswood entrance there is a ramp to our first floor (Audible Gallery, Live Room, Studio A). From our alley entrance there is a graded path to our Garden and downstairs. There is no ADA-accessible path inside the building to switch between floors.

Where are the bathrooms?

There are accessible bathrooms on both floors. On the first floor the bathroom is located in the northeast corner of Audible Gallery (front-most room). On the basement/garden level, the bathroom is past the common area, first door on the right.

Who can I contact with specific needs or questions?

Please write to Adam Vida at info@ess.org and we're happy to accommodate your needs to the best of our ability!

Are children welcome?

Yes, though we do ask that they be respectful of the musicians while they are performing. ESS's Audible Gallery space at the front of the building is available for families if kids need a little break from the concert setting.

Organized by

Founded in 1986 by Dawn and Lou Mallozzi, Eric Leonardson, and Perry Venson, Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) has occupied its Edgewater location since 2006. The facility is home to a full-service recording, mixing, and mastering studio for hire; Audible Gallery, a small public space for exhibitions, meetings, workshops, performances, and artists' projects; and the Creative Audio Archive—an invaluable collection of recordings, print, and visual ephemera related to avant-garde and exploratory sound and music of the last five decades. ESS presents eclectic performance and installation programming, workshops, and artist talks year round—both in the various spaces around the studio (including its beautiful garden) and at various partner venues around Chicago.
