<DIV CLASS="_1mf _1mj">OpenLAB June brings an evening of generative design, art and technology to your eyes and ears with speakers Gordon Monro and Melanie Huang.</DIV>

<DIV CLASS="_1mf _1mj">Melanie Huang will be talking about her most recent body of work which explores the idea of generating the medium of paint with code. She will discuss how a series of experiments led her to creating stage visuals for the hearing-impaired and the wonderful initiatives she discovered that exist to cater for the accessibility of culture. </DIV>

Gordon Monro describes himself as a generative artist: he sets up systems that generate artworks. In Gordon’s case the systems are computer programs, and the output takes the form of digital prints, videos generated frame-by-frame, or computer-based installations. Gordon’s art is influenced by biological notions of growth, evolution and ecosystems, and also by mathematics and geometrical abstract art. Gordon will talk about and give examples from his recent work, and specifically from his Nanocosm project, in which an abstracted ecosystem evolves in real time in the computer. At a theoretical level, Gordon will discuss briefly how notions of metaphor and abstraction play out in work such as his that is based on processes.

Mel Huang is a local designer and digital artist specialising in interactive installations. She has helped design and build a variety of weird and wonderful projects from colour recognition ice-cream trucks to interactive fireworks to paint machines to stage visuals for the hearing-impaired.
Passionate about the artistic side to coding, she is an advocate for simply "doing what you love", no matter how strange people look at you.

Gordon’s first studies were in science and mathematics. He went on to complete a PhD in mathematics, and subsequently taught mathematics at University for many years. Some of his work was concerned with computers and computer-based teaching. Gordon had an interest in music, and this eventually led to an involvement with electronic and computer music and multimedia; this in turn led to a practice making computer-generated visual art. In 2016 Gordon completed a practice-based PhD in Fine Art at Monash University in this area.
Gordon commenced exhibiting visual art in 2008. His work has been shown in Melbourne, Ballarat (where he lives), Sydney, Fremantle and regional Victoria. Gordon currently has an exhibition at Stephen McLaughlan Gallery in Melbourne, 31 May to 17 June 2017.
