OpenBioMAPS: Biomanufacturing Challenges & Opportunities in the UK Workshop
Come join us at this OpenBioMAPS: Biomanufacturing Workshop where we will discuss the issues and opportunities for bio-innovation in the UK
Welcome to OpenBioMAPS: Biomanufacturing Challenges and Opportunities Workshop!
Date: Wednesday, 15 October 2025
Time: 10:00-16:00 BST/UTC+1
Location: Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, West Cambridge, Philippa Fawcett Drive, Cambridge CB3 0AS, UK (directions)
Registration Dates:
- For in-person attendance: by Monday, 13 October 2025 18:00 BST/UTC+1.
- For online attendance: by Tuesday, 14 October 2025 18:00 BST/UTC+1.
Summary: Join us for this workshop on Biomanufacturing Challenges and Opportunities in the UK to discuss and provide feedback on what issues are on the forefront of industry experts within the field. Network with open-minded individuals, gain valuable insights of how you might navigate around the challenges that could affect your start-up or small/medium-enterprise (SME), and voice your opinion on how we can move forward together to reimagine biomanufacturing in the UK.
We will also have a sneak preview of the Open DNA Collections and Open Strains that are under development as part of the OpenBioMAPS project, and will be looking to recruit collaborators who wish to trial these toolkits for free in their research and commercial projects.
Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to grow and connect with others in the industry. See you there!
Schedule:
10:00-10:30 Registration and Networking
10:30-11:00 Introduction and Presentation of the Biomanufacturing Challenges Report
11:00-11:40 Breakout Discussions on Report Findings
11:40-12:00 Feedback and Open Floor Discussions of Breakout Discussions
12:00-13:00 Networking Lunch
13:00-14:00 Presentation on the Open DNA Collections, Open Strains Engineering, Plant Production, and upcoming Open Bioengineering Training Workshops
14:00-14:30 Breakout Discussions on Using Open Toolkits for Reimagining Biomanufacturing in the UK
14:30-15:00 Feedback and Open Floor Discussions of Impacts of Open Toolkits in the UK and Beyond
15:00-15:15 Register Interest for Early Adopters/Collaborators for Using the OpenBioMAPS Open Toolkits
15:15-15:30 Open Floor Q&As and Concluding Remarks
15:30-16:00 Networking Session
About the OpenBioMAPS Project:
OpenBioMAPS is a BBSRC-funded project (BB/Y007808/1) that aims to develop affordable open-source tools for distributed biomanufacturing of enzymes and antibodies, at low-cost using benchtop microbial and plant systems (MAPS), with routes to scale-up for industrial microbial and plant-based production. The overall intention is to help build capacity for adoption of these open-source biomanufacturing tools, reduce the financial and transactional costs of protein production, and allow researchers and innovators the freedom to operate in this space, thereby accelerating the UK’s transition to a sustainable bioeconomy.
One of our goals is to understand the barriers faced by UK start-ups and SMEs in engaging in biomanufacturing for research and commercial applications, such as in recombinant protein production on a lab-scale through to industrial levels.
This small workshop follows on from previous discussions with industry experts and aims to refine our understanding of the UK biomanufacturing challenges landscape.
