Event Information

Open Paint 2.0 by CATA is an admission-free, all-ages outdoor painting experience, following on the success of the longstanding Open Paint monthly community events.

For an entire afternoon, we will fill the Redwood City Courthouse Square with long tables where participants can sit to paint with friends, family, and strangers alike. Acrylic paint, brushes, and vinyl sheets are provided to participants at no cost. Canvases are available at the event for a suggested donation.

Participants of all ages, experience, and background are welcome. Come alone or with a group! The event is admission-free and first-come first-serve, unless you pay to reserve a seat. Those who provide a courtesy RSVP via Eventbrite will be granted access to the priority check-in line on the day of the event.

During the two scheduled seatings, professional artists will be live painting to inspire the attending participants. Note: the event is a free-form painting experience, and no formal art instruction is provided. This event will also feature the programs of local non-profits and the artwork of exemplary high school artists.

Community Advocacy Through Art (CATA) is a volunteer-run project of the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation. All donations to this event are used to cover event expenses and fund CATA's street art mural program.

    FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Downtown Redwood City has lots of available parking, and Redwood City transit center (Caltrain and SamTrans) is just a short walk away from the Courthouse Square.

If you drive, please note that parking is FREE at the County Garage. The entrance to the garage is located at 400 Middlefield Rd. near Veteran's Blvd. Alternatively, you may park in the Marshall St. and Jefferson St. Garage for FREE for the first 1.5 hours. There is a fee after the first 1.5 hours. Street parking may also be available at $1.00 per hour.

    What is provided for free?

Paintbrushes, acyrlic paint, and vinyl sheets (as a painting surface) are provided free of cost. Canvases of various sizes are available at the event for a suggested donation.

What should I bring into the event?

You should bring a hat and a water bottle. You are also welcome to bring your own brushes, paint palettes, and sketch supplies (like paper and pencils). Please do not bring your own paints or canvases without first consulting the event organizers.

    What about food?

Participants will have the option of ordering delicious food delivered by our local downtown restaurant partners. You are also welcome to bring your own food and drink. No alcohol is permitted.

Does my courtesty RSVP guarantee a seat?

The event is first-come, first-serve. If you select the courtesy RSVP, you will be able to utilize the priority registration line. However, this does not guarantee you a seat. The only way to reserve a seat is to select the "Reserve Seat + Canvas" ticket option.

Is there any instruction or lessons?

No. There is no formal instruction, though there will be various professional and high school artists attending whom you may ask for tips. They are usually more than happy to help! And you can draw inspiration from those painting around you (or do some on-the-fly googling while at the event).

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please contact Open Paint organizer Cary Kelly at cary@projectcata.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

You do not need to bring your ticket to the event, as it is a free and open event. However, if you pay for a reserved seat and canvas through Eventbrite, it is helpful for you to bring your printed ticket as proof of payment.

Is there indoor seating? I see some in previous photos.

No, there is not. Previously, Open Paint was hosted at Cyclismo Cafe and included both indoor and outdoor seating options. Open Paint 2.0 will take place outdoors int he Courthouse Square. There will be limited shade, so please bring a hat and sunscreen.
