Open Data Research Symposium 2018

The Open Data Instituteworks with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy, data ecosystem, where people can make better decisions using data and manage any harmful impacts. The ODI was co-founded in 2012 by the inventor of the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee and artificial intelligence expert Sir Nigel Shadbolt to show the value of open data, and to advocate for the innovative use of open data to affect positive change across the globe. We’re an independent, non-profit, non-partisan company that, since our creation, has welcomed high-profile board members including Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts, Lastminute.com founder Baroness Martha Lane Fox and former European Commissioner Neelie Kroes. Headquartered in London, with an international reach, hundreds of members, thousands of people trained, dozens of startups incubated, and a convening space based in the heart of London’s thriving Shoreditch area, we invite everyone interested in developing with data – whether on an individual, organisational or global level – to get in touch.The GovLab’s mission is to improve people’s lives by changing the way we govern using new technologies.As a global action research center, hosted at New York University, we work with public and private partners to strengthen the ability of institutions and people to work more openly, collaboratively, effectively and legitimately to make better decisions, design public services and solve public problems. In particular, we focus on how increased availability and use of data, new ways to leverage the capacity and expertise of people, combined with new advances in technology and science can transform the way we govern. A key priority involves our work ondata collaboratives: new and emergent types of public-private partnerships leveraging private data for good. Resulting from that work, we identified the need fordata stewardsand we are now building a network to connect those already focused on data stewardship.

Open Data Institute, The GovLab

Open Data can improve government, empower citizen, create opportunities and solve public problems -- but it’s not a panacea. To better understand and harness its impact, we need to delve deeper to unpack the dynamics of open data practices. We also need to maintain a critical perspective and develop empirically-tested theories on the publication and use of open data.
Now in its third year, the <A HREF="http://odresearch.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Data Research Symposium</A> (ODRS18) provides members of the global open data community an opportunity to shape the field’s research agenda. Specifically, researchers will have a chance to share completed research that is robust, relevant and has the ability to inform our understanding of open data’s contribution to society. 
The Symposium is presented by <A HREF="http://www.thegovlab.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Governance Lab</A> (The GovLab), <A HREF="http://od4d.net/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Data for Development</A> (OD4D), the <A HREF="http://www.opendataresearch.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Data Research Network</A> (ODRN), and the <A HREF="https://www.idrc.ca/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">International Development Research Center</A> (IDRC).
ODRS18 will take place over one full day on September 25, 2018 in Bueno Aires, just ahead of the biannual <A HREF="https://www.opendatacon.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">International Open Data Conference</A> (IODC) that is also taking place in Argentina’s capital. The Symposium will be divided into morning paper presentations and afternoon workshops.
Researchers will present 8-12 accepted papers representing a variety of disciplines as well as cross-country and cross-sector collaborations -- all with an emphasis on empirical social research. Workshops will share tools or processes relevant to the research community. Participants will also explore ways to revive the <A HREF="http://www.opendataresearch.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Data Research Network (ODRN)</A> and offer input on how best to create a vibrant, invaluable and inclusive open data research network.
