Come have a bite of Brazil’s biggest celebration right after the carnival, the Festa Junina (June Party) also known as Festa de São João (Saint John the Baptist Party)*.
The Brazilian theater company Group Dot BR is thrilled to present Opa! São João! Dive into an eight-hour festa junina with live music from Forró in the Dark and Mambembé + Marcos Costa, and the DJs Greg Caz and Tietta spinning a mix of traditional songs and a variety of Brazilian rhythms that will keep everyone dancing all day.
There’s more: Enjoy performances and Brazilian digital arts presented by Group Dot BR, join a free crash course in forró and quadrilha with Sabrina Evangelista, and take part in the group mock wedding along with a quadrilha and quadrilha queen competition led by the one and only Pietra Parker.
Indulge in traditional food by Andrea's Brazilian Homemade Goods, Mari Tamiozzy Vegan Chef and Queijo Mel, and explore visual arts curated by Angelica Walker Projects. Don’t miss our free costume and makeup station and partake in traditional fun games! More to be announced! So, gather your plaids and ribbons and get ready to soak up all the fun.
Parents, we’ve got you covered! Kids can join the festivities from 3 - 6 PM. 21 + after 6PM.
This event is supported in part by the NYSCA-A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund (A Statewide Theatre Regrant Program) and is raising funds for Group Dot BR’s theater productions.
*Brought to Brazil by the Portuguese, this harvest celebration mixed with African and Indigenous traditions to become a unique and diverse Brazilian cultural manifestation.
