Online Quantum Computing Tutorial - June 15, 2020

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is a DOE Office of Science User Facility that enables breakthroughs in science and engineering by providing supercomputing resources and expertise to the research community.

Argonne National Laboratory will host an online Quantum Computing Tutorial 
on June 15, 2020.  A BlueJeans link will be provided once your registration is finalized.
 
In the first part of the tutorial, the introduction to Qiskit will be given by IBM instructors Abe Asfaw and Matthew Stypulkoski. The participants will learn the basics of quantum computing and how to program IBM quantum computers with the Qiskit framework.
 
In the second part of the tutorial, Ruslan Shaydulin will introduce the MaxCut problem and explain how it can be solved on IBM quantum computers available on the cloud today using the Qiskit framework. This presentation will assume little to no prior knowledge of quantum computation. Moreover, examples will be provided of how more complicated problems can be solved using the QAOA (Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm). The tutorial will be interactive and will use Jupyter notebooks to explain step by step how to reformulate problems for QAOA and how to make QAOA work in practice. We will walk attendees through the boilerplate code required for quantum optimization, constructed from the ground up with as little hidden complexity as possible. These easily customizable code snippets will allow attendees to skip straight to adapting QAOA to their problems as well as to applying their own research to improving QAOA performance.
 
The recommended way to run the hands-on Jupyter notebooks is using IBM Quantum Experience web interface. Please create an account <A HREF="https://quantum-computing.ibm.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</A> before the tutorial (you might have to create an IBM ID if you do not have one).

FOREIGN NATIONALS: ELIGIBILITY
 
The following restrictions apply to foreign nationals:
Foreign nationals from countries that appear on a restricted foreign country listing in section 15 CFR 740.7 License Exceptions for Computers (namely, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria) require a very lengthy approval process for access to DOE supercomputers, which will not be completed in time for the workshop. 
 
Foreign nationals will need a valid passport, visa, and supporting documents with an expiration date beyond the end of the training program. Department of Energy policy now requires a CV/resume including educational and employment history.
