Using Phenomenology to Explore What It Is Like to Be Culturally Oppressed

On Being &#x27;Othered&#x27;: Using Phenomenology to Explore What It Is Like to Be Culturally OppressedThis three-part course introduces key concepts from phenomenology for the purpose of investigating the relational and embodied dimensions of systemic cultural oppression on the lived experiences of our patients and ourselves. The phenomenological study of subjectivity will be demonstrated through introductory readings as well as two papers written specifically about the lived experience of racism and homophobia. The following questions are addressed: 1) What is the branch of philosophy known as phenomenology and how can it help clinicians? 2) What does it mean to investigate the structures of subjectivity? 3) How can phenomenological tools and insights be used to critically examine systems of oppression and their impact on the lives of patients and ourselves?The course is taught on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, January 23, 30, February 6, 2021.Learning ObjectivesI. Students will learn to identify what phenomenology is and how phenomenological inquiry differs from other modes of investigation. II. Students will learn key phenomenological concepts and apply those concepts to clinical work. III. Students will learn how to investigate the relational and embodied dimensions of racist and homophobic lived experiences of their patients.Eric D. Hartman, private practitioner. He received his MSW from NYU in 2005 and then trained at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center in NYC, where he graduated in 2013. He earned his Doctor of Social Work from Rutgers University, where his research explored the impact of heterosexism on gay male embodiment. He worked with LGBTQ homeless youth for 7 years and has written on clinical work with LGBTQ people for four different peer-reviewed publications.Continuing EducationThis class is approved for 4.5 CE contact hours for psychologists, social workers, licensed psychoanalysts, and licensed mental health clinicians:The National Institute for the Psychotherapies is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education credits for psychologists.
