Event description
Odessa, Sofie Winterson

About this Event

Odessa was at a low point. Her record deal had crumbled, her savings account was depleted, and, worst of all, her creative well had run dry. With pressure mounting on all sides and nowhere to call home, she decided to head for the hills, moving into a secluded house at the top of a mountain where she could get away from the music business and focus on what really mattered.

“The picture I’d painted was melting,” she explains. “Nothing had gone the way I thought it would, and I genuinely didn’t know what to do.”

It was on top of that mountain, looking out over Los Angeles with the kind of calm and perspective that can only come from a healthy distance, that Odessa’s muse unexpectedly returned. Over the course of the next three months, she wrote at a remarkable pace, penning a series of increasingly gorgeous, revelatory songs that would go on to form the bedrock of her stunning new album, ‘All Things.’ Produced in tandem by Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Conor Oberst), Wilco’s Pat Sansone, and Spoon’s Jim Eno, the collection is both psychologically raw and emotionally mature, a graceful meditation on acceptance and perseverance that’s fueled by ethereal vocals and elegant string arrangements. It’s a work of catharsis and release, to be sure, but more than that, it’s the sound of a songwriter rediscovering herself, of an artist reclaiming the strength and promise she’d all but forgotten she possessed.

A California native, Odessa first gained recognition as a sidewoman playing violin with the likes of Rayland Baxter and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes before launching her solo career with the breakout single “I Will Be There” in 2012. Upon landing in a prominent Subaru ad campaign, the track became the year’s most-searched song on Shazam, and the buzz surrounding it helped Odessa score a major label record deal for her self-titled debut, which came out to a rapturous response in 2015. The New York Times hailed Odessa’s music as “an emanation of California spaciousness,” while Paste called her songwriting “delicate and beguiling,” and Harper’s Bazaar dubbed her “the coolest singer-songwriter you haven't heard of yet.” Songs from the album, meanwhile, racked up roughly 40 million streams on Spotify, soundtracked popular series like Grey’s Anatomy and Hart of Dixie, and landed Odessa her first national television appearance. She toured relentlessly in support of the record, too, performing both headline dates and support slots with everyone from Conor Oberst and Jenny Lewis to Bret Dennen and The Lone Bellow.

Sofie Winterson creates her own musical world with atmospheric synths, guitars with a lot of reverb and her enchanting voice. For her new music she has drawn inspiration from a mix of shoegaze, dream pop and folk acts such as Mazzy Star, Beach House, Alvvays, Big Thief, Whitney and Real Estate. Her fanbase has expanded steadily since her first releases. She played several times at SXSW and toured extensively along the West Coast. Sofie is a Dutch artist who recently moved to Los Angeles, where she has found like-minded people. In 2015, she drew attention to herself with the beautiful video of ‘Dreams’, a melancholic coming-of-age video that appeared through Nowness. The following year she was part of the Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal. At the tail end of 2018 she released another full length, entitled ‘Sophia Electric’. After writing this record completely by herself it was time for a collaboration. She started writing music together with producer Benny Sings and this resulted in the beautiful 4 track EP ‘Moral’ (2019).

Not only is Sofie Winterson an acclaimed artist, she also worked with great success on the album 'Imaginary Lines' by Fatima Yamaha, the 'Close My Eyes' EP by Rimer London and the single 'Lift Me From The Ground’ by San Holo.
