Opening Concert of Oak Hill Music Festival 2024

Folk Music

Journey around the world through folk music — done classical style! Some of Dvorak’s most iconic works were inspired by the music he heard on his visit to the United States, including his “American” String Quartet (as well as the famous New World Symphony). Stacy Garrop’s Silver Dagger draws from an Appalachian folk song about star-crossed lovers, while William Grant Still’s Miniatures arrange cowboy music, Spirituals, and other tunes. Carl Nielsen’s colorful and evocative woodwind quintet reflects his influences of the Danish folk music he heard growing up and his love for Mozart and Bach.
