We are the New York Java Special Interest Group (NYJavaSIG), the largest Java Users Group in North America with 10K+  members.  We are well-known in the international technology community with monthly meetings. NATIVE INTERFACES: THE PHANTOM MENACE - Tony Printezis - JVM Engineer - Twitter When it comes to large-scale software development, managed runtimes are the tool of choice for most developers due to the flexibility and safety features they provide. Unfortunately for developers that need to interact with native code from their managed applications, the native interfaces that managed runtimes expose are a constant source of bugs and frustration. An example of such a native interface is Java's JNI which is considered very heavy-weight and clunky to use. This presentation will briefly describe why it is quite challenging to design a native interface that it is performant, provides maximum flexibility to the runtime, and is easy to use.
The talk will conclude with a quick overview of Project Panama, the next-generation native interface for Java that is currently under development. Panama has been designed to address a lot of the shortcomings that typically plague native interfaces in order to dramatically improve ease-of-use, safety, and performance.
BIO Tony Printezis (@TonyPrintezis) is a Staff Software Engineer at Twitter and a member of the Twitter VM Team in the Infrastructure Organization. He has over 20 years of virtual machine implementation experience with special focus on memory management. Most of his projects have involved improving the performance, scalability, responsiveness, parallelism, concurrency, monitoring, and visualization of garbage collectors. HOW TO MAKE A PROJECT FULLY JAVA 9 COMPATIBLE - Nikhil Nanivadekar - Project Lead/Committer for Eclipse Collections Java 9 brings numerous changes that might break existing applications. This presentation is a case study of making a third-party Java Collections library (Eclipse Collections) Java 9–compatible. You will get an overview of all the steps taken and the evolution of the final, Java 9–compatible product. These steps are essentially similar to those you might have to take to upgrade your application to use JDK 9. The session covers available tooling and simple yet practical tips and tricks that will help you in the upgrade process.
BIO Nikhil Nanivadekar is a Vice President in Private Wealth Management in the Technology division of Goldman Sachs. Nikhil is the project lead and committer for Eclipse Collections and has presented at JavaOne, DevoxxUS, GIDS and Java User Group meetups. He is passionate about robotics, has conducted robotics workshops at JCrete4Kids, JavaOne4Kids and Devoxx4Kids. Nikhil graduated in 2012 from University of Utah with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Robotics and Controls.
