Synopsis:

Nourishing Well: Black Women and the Poetics of Sacred Space is an exploration of literature, music, and art as critical pathways toward renewal, connection, and intentional care for, by and amongst Black and queer women. While “nourishing well” metaphorically speaks to the notion of Black women finding all they may need within one another, the latter speaks to the power of art in transforming traditional performance spaces into “sacred spaces” that nurture the human spirit. Conceptualized by writer/poet Mariah Ivey’s 2024  MA thesis project, Nourishing Well analyzes the spectrum of Black women’s lived experiences and brings visibility to their stories through poetry, visual art, photography, and film.

The Walker building, once the headquarters and manufacturing plant of Madam CJ Walker Hair Care and Beauty Products, boasts much of its original 1927 architecture…but we are more than just a building. The Madam Walker Legacy Center is a 501 c3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Madam CJ Walker by providing cultural education, promoting social justice, supporting entrepreneurship and empowering youth to become the next generation of entreprenuers and civic leaders. We use our historic building as a venue for celebrating cultural diversity, rich heritage and cultural traditions, primarily through art from the African-American perspective.
