The Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant is an award-winning wastewater treatment plant owned and operated by Fairfax County Government and is located in Lorton, VA. The plant's treatment process is safe, reliable, and cost-effective. The continuous operations result in effluent quality that consistently meets – or surpasses – strict national and state water quality requirements.
During the tour, you may learn:
- The major treatment processes that wastewater goes through – from Primary Treatment to Final Treatment, as well as analytical testing performed in the laboratory.
- The regulations that need to be achieved before being discharged into the Potomac River via Gunston Cove.
- Improvements made at the plant to continually improve/enhance the quality of our discharge water.
- What students/residents can do to become more proactive stewards of our environment
- All visitors must wear closed-toed shoes such as sneakers or boots (No flip-flops or other footwear allowed).
- All visitors must wear long pants. Shorts and loose-fitting clothing are not allowed.
- All tours must have 5 attendants, if less than five participants sign up, we will ask you to reschedule with another group.
