NIH SBIR/STTR Programs - An Overview

The University of California Center for Accelerated Innovation (UC CAI) is a collaboration of the five UC medical campuses, with a mission to translate NHLBI- and NIDA-funded discoveries to improve health and health care and address unmet medical needs. The transition is accelerated by applying business and product development practices from the biomedical industry to advance the most promising technologies toward commercialization. The CAI is headquartered at UCLA, with partners at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UCSF.

Dr. Jennifer Shieh from the NHLBI (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) will give a presentation about the SBIR and STTR programs at NHLBI/NIH on Friday, June 3rd, 10:30 - 11:30 am. After her talk, Dr. Shieh will meet with teams 1-on-1, to address specific questions - if interested, you must reserve a spot at this link:

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs are one of the largest sources of early-stage capital for technology commercialization in the US. These programs allow US-owned and operated small businesses to engage in federal research and development that has strong potential for commercialization. 
SBIR/STTR programs are excellent sources of non-dilutive funding for small businesses. The NIH SBIR program permits and encourages research partnerships with academic institutions. The NIH STTR program is similar to the SBIR program, but requires that the small business formally collaborate with a research institution.

All interested individuals are invited to attend: faculty, postdoctoral fellows, researchers, students, entrepreneurs, small business executives, and others who might benefit from learning about the SBIR and STTR programs at NHLBI and NIH. 
Speaker:
Dr. Jennifer Shieh is Small Business Coordinator and Program Director in the Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination at NHLBI, where she helps small businesses commercialize technology focused on heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders through the SBIR/STTR program. Previously, she was a Program Director at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) SBIR Development Center, having joined NCI as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow. Dr. Shieh earned her PhD in neurosciences at Stanford University.
