About this event

Have you ever wondered what happens at the museum after the doors are locked and the lights are turned out?

Well here is your chance. The museum will be hosting a camp-in for children ages 8-12 where they get to spend the night at the museum. Participate in several hands-on activities that bring the past to life, watch a movie complete with popcorn before heading off to bed, and in the morning say goodbye with a tour of the caboose.

Register as an individual or a group.

A chaperone MUST accompany each child. At least 1 chaperone for every 4 children if registering as a group.

THIS EVENT IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO 25 TOTAL PEOPLE. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!

ALL participants MUST read the Participant Guide and fill out the Participant Permission and Release Form before the event. The guide and form will be emailed to participants upon registration.

All children coming as part of a group and NOT accompanied by their parent must fill out a Permission Form Waiver. The waiver will also be emailed to participants upon registration.

The museum reserves the right to adjust, cancel, postpone, or otherwise alter program activities, dates, or times.

For questions or more information, please contact the museum's Education Coordinator by phone at (540) 829-1749 or email at education@culpepermuseum.com.

Frequently asked questions

Where do we get to sleep in the museum?

Groups will sleep in one of our galleries. When groups check in they will be informed of their sleeping area. Groups cannot reserve a specific space in advance.

What type of sleeping gear can I bring?

You may bring sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and twin air mattresses (no queen- or king‐size, please). Battery- or foot-operated pumps are recommended as we are unable to guarantee sleeping space near an outlet. Please test your air mattress and pumps before arrival. Cots are NOT allowed.

What else should I bring?

We recommend comfortable clothes with layers to sleep in as the temperature may adjust through the night. Shoes are required in the museum, so you might want slip-ons for late-night restroom visits. Headphones are required if you need to use your phone after lights out. We recommend a flashlight.

What NOT to bring.

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES No handheld electronic gaming devices No valuables No weapons

What kind of snack can I expect? What will be served for breakfast?

Snack typically consists of a small, bagged snack like chips or pretzels. There is also water. Breakfast typically consists of fruit, muffins, granola bars, as well as hot coffee, juice, and water. Water is available all night.

Your information says no outside food, but someone in my group has allergies. What do I do?

If someone in your group has allergies, you are permitted to bring your own food for snack and breakfast. We cannot guarantee that our provided food is allergen‐free. Please let us know ahead of time so that we can do our best to recognize and accommodate any allergies.

Will the museum be completely dark and silent after lights out?

The museum does not get totally dark, as there are safety lights on in spaces throughout the building. If you are a light sleeper, we recommend that you consider bringing a sleep mask to block any ambient lights and earplugs to tune out nighttime noises. We ask that all guests be mindful of others.

Can I bring children under the age of 8?

No. Activities are designed for children 8–12 years old, and we find that younger guests have a tough time understanding and participating enough to enjoy the event.

Can teenagers and adults attend?

No. To ensure a positive experience for all guests, all children attending must be 8-12 years old. Adults may only attend as chaperones.

When does registration end?

Registration for each event ends at midnight on the previous Saturday (1 week) before the event. All reservations are first come, first served. No tickets are available at the door.

Can I get a refund if I can't attend?

Refund requests made 2 weeks or less before registration ends will only be entitled to a refund of fifty percent (50%) of the fee. Tickets are non-refundable after registration ends.

How do I book for a group?

The best way is if the group leader buys tickets for everyone. If an individual buys a ticket they must note the group leader on the reservation. Groups are welcome to join public overnight dates, pending availability. If you would like to book a private overnight for your group, please contact us.

I am part of a group and someone else bought my ticket. What do I need to know about checking in?

We will send an email to ticket purchasers and we ask that the information be forwarded to all participants. Participants must know the name of the person who bought the tickets in order to check-in. If you haven’t received any information, please reach out to your group leader.

Where do I check-in? Do I need to bring a receipt or a ticket?

Check-in begins at 7:00 pm at the museum front desk. The doors will be locked at 7:30 pm, anyone arriving after that will not be allowed in and will not get a refund. We will have the list of participants but you should bring a copy of your ticket just in case. If you are part of a group see above.

Where do I park?

The museum does not provide parking for program guests. However, the nearest long-term parking lot is a block away from the museum at the Triangle/Amtrak lot.

I’d like to visit the museum after the program; do I need to buy a ticket and what time can I come?

Free next-day admission is included in your ticket. Please continue to wear the wristband distributed at the program to gain entry to the museum. The museum is closed to the public from 9 am to 10 am as we prepare for the upcoming day.

What else should I know to prepare me for my stay?

NO alcoholic beverages and weapons of any kind are permitted in the building. Anyone thought to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be escorted from the premises without a refund. Please leave valuables and electronics at home. All Museum of Culpeper History safety policies apply.
