This class is intended to fulfill the didactic and practical components of instruction for insertion, use, care, and maintenance of extended dwell peripheral catheters for the neonatal patient.
Each participant needs to bring an introducer, PICC, and insertion tray to use. If you have difficulty with this, please contact rkoeppel@hs.uci.edu
Objectives:
1. Define the terms of central and midline PICCs
2. List the characteristics of fluids that are appropriate for administration via central and midline placed PICCs
3. Discuss appropriate patient assessment and preparation prior to insertion
4. Identify veins in the upper and lower extremity and scalp suitable for PICC insertion
5. List considerations critical to appropriate device selection
6. Discuss pertinent infection control measures related to catheter insertion
7. Demonstrate one appropriate catheter insertion utilizing sterile technique
8. Describe appropriate catheter care and maintenance techniques
