About this event

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) affects millions worldwide and claims nearly 300,000 lives each year. The disease is a complication of rheumatic fever(RF), an autoimmune inflammatory reaction to streptococcal infections (strep throat). While RHD cases have declined significantly in high-income nations, the same is not true for the developing world, especially where poverty is widespread and access to health services is limited.

This November, the NHLBI will host a virtual workshop series to evaluate the current state of the science and identify research gaps surrounding the prevention and treatment of RHD. The workshop is free, open to the public, and will be recorded.

  • Nov. 1, 2021: 8:00-10:30 a.m. EDT
  • Nov. 3, 2021: 8:00-10:00 a.m. EDT
  • Nov. 8, 2021: 8:30-11:00 a.m. EST

Work groups that include international experts in vaccine development, global health, research training, implementation research, cardiology, cardiac surgery and other related disciplines will present synopses of their work on the first two days of the workshop. They will discuss the following topics:

  • Primordial Prevention: Social Determinants of Health and Vaccine Development Efforts
  • Primary Prevention: Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Streptococcal Infections
  • Secondary Prevention: Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment of RF and RHD
  • Tertiary Prevention: Management of RHD Complications and Access to Healthcare

The third day features breakout sessions to discuss the challenges faced by basic, clinical, and implementation science researchers working on RF/RHD, as well as the opportunities their research presents. By examining RHD holistically — from the initial streptococcal infection to surgical management, and from bench research to implementation science — the workshop will act as a catalyst to stimulate investigator-initiated research and build research capacity in these areas.
