The News Literacy Project (NLP) is a nonpartisan national education nonprofit that works with educators and journalists to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. NLP provides these students with the essential skills they need to become smart, active consumers of news and information and engaged, informed citizens.News literacy teaches that all information is not created equal. It helps young people use the aspirational standards of quality journalism to determine what they should trust, share and act on. It also fosters an understanding of the importance of the First Amendment and a free press in a democracy, especially the watchdog role.NLP’s goal is to see news literacy embedded in the American educational experience as an essential skill, giving every student an appreciation of credible journalism and the skills to be an active participant in a robust democracy.

It’s Time for the News Literacy Project’s NewsLitCamp! 
Join the News Literacy Project (NLP) and NewseumED on Saturday, April 21, for a highly engaging, teacher-centered NewsLitCamp featuring NewseumED staff and journalists from The Washington Post — including Robert Costa, a national politics reporter and the host of PBS’s Washington Week; Matea Gold, the Post’s political investigations editor; Margaret Sullivan the Post’s media columnist; Eugene Scott who writes about identity politics for The Fix; Krissah Thompson, an assignment editor for the Post; Robert McCartney, who is the Post’s senior regional correspondent, covering politics and policy in the greater Washington area; and Wesley Lowery, who covers race, justice and law enforcement. This professional development event will be held at the Newseum (<A HREF="https://maps.google.com/?q=555+Pennsylvania+Ave.+NW&entry=gmail&source=g" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW</A>) from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
NLP is a nonpartisan education nonprofit, based in Washington, that equips students with the tools to separate fact from fiction and to know what news and information to trust, share and act on. NewseumED, our host, is the educational arm of the Newseum; it provides free online resources to cultivate the skills to authenticate, analyze and evaluate information from a variety of sources and to provide historical context to current events.
Space is limited. All participants will receive a voucher for lunch at the Newseum cafeteria. District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) educators will receive professional development credits.
About NewsLitCamp: NewsLitCamp is a hybridized approach to “edcamp”-style professional development, with topical sessions (developed with input from teachers) in the morning and an open-ended, teacher-suggested workshop schedule in the afternoon. For this NewsLitCamp, middle school and high school educators will come together at the Newseum for news literacy training and conversations with NLP staff, NewseumED staff and journalists from The Washington Post.
Why should I attend? NLP created NewsLitCamps to help educators improve their own news literacy skills, introduce them to resources for teaching news literacy and get their ideas and input for new resources. We also want to encourage a greater understanding between journalists and teachers — including an appreciation of the realities each face in playing a vital civic role on the front lines of the country’s democracy. NewseumED has nearly 20 years of experience leading professional development workshops that teach media literacy and support the development of the next generation of informed, engaged participants in civic life.
Bonus: Participants will learn about <A HREF="http://checkology.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NLP’s checkology® virtual classroom,</A> a comprehensive news literacy e-learning hub that complements educators' lesson plans, and <A HREF="https://newsliteracyproject-my.sharepoint.com/personal/dreyes_newslit_org/Documents/NewseumED's%20website" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NewseumED’s website</A>, which offers — at no cost — thousands of primary sources, lesson plans and videos on teaching media literacy, civics and the First Amendment. 
 
NLP is offering access to the virtual classroom free of charge for the rest of the 2017-18 school year. Lesson topics include:
