Nettle Fibre Workshop
Learn how to make fibre & yarn from local nettles. (No, nettles won't sting after being harvested :D)
Did you know you can make cordage, yarn & cloth from our local nettles? Stinging nettles have been used as a fibre plant for textiles for over 3,000 years in the UK, to make everything from heavy sailcloth to fine table linen up until the 18th century. Nettles are of great interest again since they one of most sustainable local fibres you can imagine.
During the workshop we will gather local nettles & learn about their history. Nettles won't sting after being harvested. You will learn how to extract nettle fibre, and learn a simple way to spin it so it can be used for weaving, knitting or crochet.
Brigitte has rediscovered this forgotten practice through experimentation and research as part of her MA in sustainable textiles and now shares her experience in this hands-on workshop.
