Description:

This panel discussion will focus on how to improve the quality of life for residents in neighborhoods that have had limited investment while exploring how to discourage gentrification and displacement. We will hear from a nonprofit and for-profit developer, planning director, and City of Long Beach Equity Officer, with the discussion moderated by an urban designer. Panelists will explore the community opportunities, challenges, and fears of neighborhood investment.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the goals and objectives of neighborhood revitalization.
  • Understand the criteria for affordable housing developers and community benefits available through various funding programs.
  • Learn what it takes for a small-scale infill builder to invest in a neighborhood.
  • What infrastructure improvements can the city provide to encourage investment and uplift communities?
  • What are the challenges to allowing investment that could promote gentrification and displacement?

Panelists:

Moderated by Shruti Shankar, AICP, LEED AP ND, Urban Design Director – Studio One Eleven
