About this event

  • 3 hours 30 minutes

You are invited to participate in learning more about the Los Angeles City Budget. All City services and issues come down to budget.

The event starts at 9:00 a.m. and we invite you to join us for breakfast and networking starting at 7:30.

This year's in-person Budget Day will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall with a Plenary Session consisting of keynote speakers and a panel discussion on the theme "Who is Doing the Work?" followed by Regional Breakout Sessions.

Chair of the City Council Budget, Finance, and Innovation Committee Bob Blumenfield will deliver a keynote address as will City Controller Kenneth Mejia.

The panel will include Chief Deputy Controller Rick Cole and James Finney-Conlon, Senior Policy Manager at the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce. Other invited panelists are City Administrative Officer Matt Szabo, Mayor Bass's budget team, and Larry Elder.

You will have an opportunity to share the concerns and issues of your neighborhood in the Regional Breakout Sessions so the Budget Advocates may bring them to the attention of City leadership.

We will be conducting Budget Advocates elections in the Regional Breakout Sessions. All Budget Advocates seats are up for election. Only Budget Representatives are eligible to run.

Language interpretation is available. Please make requests via Eventbrite registration at least 72 hours in advance of the event.

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates are an elected body under the Neighborhood Council system that represents the interests of stakeholders across Los Angeles with a focus on City services and how well they are funded.

The City is composed of departments that provide services. Each fiscal year every City department creates a budget that covers its projected costs based on parameters set by the Mayor. The department budgets are assembled into the full City budget.

Members of the Budget Advocates meet yearly with the City departments to discuss how stakeholder concerns can be addressed within the department budgets. They draw up a list of recommendations and, after presenting them to the Mayor, they release them as part of the Budget Advocates’ annual White Paper.

The Budget Advocates sponsor Budget Day, an annual opportunity for Neighborhood Council board members and Los Angeles stakeholders to learn more about how the City operates and to give input on their budgetary and City Services concerns.

The Budget Advocates are elected regionally by the Budget Representatives from each Neighborhood Council to ensure local concerns about services and spending are relayed to the Budget Advocates throughout the year. These grassroots concerns are given voice when the Budget Advocates call for changes to the City’s budget so individual quality of life is maintained.

The only way to achieve change is to speak up.

All meetings of the Budget Advocates and its committees are open to the public. Come and join us. Visit our web page at https://www.BudgetAdvocates.org/ for more information.
