Harlem International Film Festival: May 16-May 19

Celebrating the Finest Cinema from Harlem to Hong Kong! The Harlem International Film Festival (Hi) announces its 19th Anniversary taking place from May 16-19, 2024. Events include the screenplay showdown, panel discussions, and the Harlem Spotlight Award

<h3>NEGRITA</h3>NEGRITA is a feature documentary about diverse Afro Latinas who explore and confront culture and racism while defining their own identity in the United States. NEGRITA explores the ideology of Blackness, and how both American and Latino cultures perpetuate the belief that Blackness is to be destroyed. Through personal accounts, family pictures, old videos, and interactions with family and friends, NEGRITA will follow the director's own struggle with identity, her journey to embrace her African history, and her conversations with her family about their disapproval of her journey, while interweaving the stories/experiences shared by other Afro Latinas. Hailing from different countries: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Panama NEGRITA follows these Afro Latinas as they confront the notion that Black is negative or bad, and watch as they grow to empower themselves. <h4>Director Biography - Magdalena Albizu</h4>Magdalena is a writer, director, and producer. She started her career as a social worker; she found herself wanting to express her creative side. Since changing careers, Magdalena has been fortunate to work continuously as a freelancer in all forms of media. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Content is geared toward adults, but people of all ages are welcome. Guests can arrive at any time between 3:30 and 4 pm (since this is a film screening we appreciate your timely arrival).Photography: On occasion, we capture photographs or video for promotional and archival purposes. When registering for the event at The Forum, you give Columbia University in the City of New York the right to use you and your child's image for said purposes.
