With a culture of hackathons on the rise, we need to explore the role that hackathons in academic access, excitation and acceleration in bringing about excellence. Participants will be challenged to contextualize their solutions for the betterment of life and channel economic growth.

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects.

Northern Cape Developer Hackathon (NCDevHack) is an annual provincial hackathon aimed at stimulating and developing more ICT/Entrepreneurship in the province.

This year, the solutions at NCDev Hackathon will be centred on:

  • Public, Academic, environmental, entertainment, etc.

  • Communication

  • Research and community engagement

  • Content delivery and sharing

Also included at the NCDevHack this year is the:

IoT for Social Good Design Challenge -

Shaping Human Settlement

From 18th August - 18 September 2017, EWB-SA will host their first ever Design Challenge. The challenge will be launched over a weekend during this period.

Innovators will design sensor networks that will later be deployed across South Africa in order to collect a national data set of key indicators of health and well-being in informal settlements.

This data can then be used to inform innovation activities around informal housing in South Africa. We call it Internet of Things for Social Good.
