NATIONAL CONGRESS OF BLACK WOMEN-PRINGE GEORGE’S COUNTY MARYLAND INC. (NCBW-PGCMD INC) supports the national mission and vision with programs and activities designed to be a catalyst that helps community members reach their goals and fulfill their potential. Such activities include:

CELEBRATING PHENOMENAL WOMEN AND MEN “Sisters Empowering Sisters” is an event that celebrates outstanding and giving people in Prince George’s County who has contributed to the improved well-being of people and communities. NCBW-PGCMD acknowledge accomplishments and commitment to community service of those who give selflessly to uplift and serve others. Honorees are selected based on a set criterion with the public celebrations well attended. In addition, college scholarship recipients are honored at this event.

CENSUS INITIATIVE In collaboration with State Farm Insurance, sent out information in English and Spanish to churches, colleges, civic organizations and partners explaining the vital role that completing the 2020 Census plays in receiving federal funds to improve communities and meet critical development needs. NCBW-PGCMD also explained how to complete questionnaires online, by phone, or by mail, and via door-to-door workers with proper identification - with links to this information in 59 languages, including Braille and sign language.

COALITION OF WOMEN AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE Advocates for changing society to have zero tolerance for domestic violence. NCBW-PGCMD does this through events that affect the public policy; educate and increase awareness of the impact of domestic violence on families and communities; and generate action from non-profit and faith-based groups on behalf of those impacted by domestic violence and abuse in our county.

COLLEGE FOR KIDS’ SCHOLARSHIPS The goal is to promote great opportunities for those in need to become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. Members have participated in a College for Kids: Gospel Extravaganza, Health & Fitness, Through Challenges we Continue to Stand, HBCU’s Empowering Youth & Maximizing Potential, Saving Our Lives, Serving the Underserved and currently Achieving Higher Heights to provide scholarships to high school seniors and 1st year college students, including those with SPECIAL NEEDS, to be presented at our “Sisters Empowering Sisters” events. In addition, NCBW-PGCMD participated in several HBCU Festivals sponsored by the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA which annually connects many times more than 60,000 first generation attendee college students to academic institutions with many receiving on the spot admissions, auditions, and financial support.

CORONA VIRUS/COVID-19 INITIATIVE In partnership with Pizza Hut, the NCBW-PGCMD spearheaded a project called Adopt a Hospital in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area during the Corona Virus/COVID-19 Pandemic. For 2 weeks, NCBW-PGCMD provided lunch and dinner daily to the nurses located at the comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Room, at the DC General Hospital, in appreciation for their front-line work.

GOVERNMENT AND NON-PROFIT EVENTS THAT IMPACT OUR COMMUNITIES Members have attended Congressional and District Town Halls, Networking Meetings, Veterans Gatherings and government shut down informational meetings to be able to educate others on issues presented, progress made and to voice concerns. These were convened by Senator Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, Congressman Steny Hoyer, Congressman Anthony brown and District 3 Council member Dannielle Glaros. In addition, NCBW-PGCMD participates in non-profit informational and sustainability meetings with the People for Change Coalition and The Poor People's Campaign.

HEALTH CARE/CIVIL RIGHTS NCBW-PGCMD partnered with Health Care is a Human Right, Prince George’s County Chapter, to show the film, ‘POWER TO HEAL: MEDICARE AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS REVOLUTION” - exploring racism in healthcare, past and present, in Greenbelt MD. This is an hour-long documentary chronicling the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that racially desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country, all in a matter of months in 1966. A panel of health experts and a community advocate interacted with the audience after the show about options today, such as Improved Medicare for All. NCBW-PGCMD also participated in Howard University Television’s live taping of “Vocal Point – The March: Then and Now”; The March on Washington (50 years later).

HUMAN TRAFFICKING The available data clearly indicate that the number of youth experiencing human trafficking is increasing in NCBW-PGCMD has been in collaboration with numerous human services organizations to increase awareness, identify county-wide trauma-informed approaches and plan a comprehensive, coordinated, community response to combating human trafficking. NCBW-PGCMD has participated in National’s Human Sex Trafficking Initiative to Bring Our Girls Back Campaign.

MARCH FOR OUR LIVES In partnership with “The March for Our Lives”, a student-led demonstration, NCBW-PGCMD marched to support stronger gun violence prevention measures. Gun violence includes mass shootings, suicides, domestic abuse, and violence on our streets which disproportionately affects our youth and communities of color.

SPECIAL NEEDS NCBW-PGCMD advocate on behalf of children and youth with physical, developmental, behavioral/ emotional and sensory challenges, inclusive of racial/ethnic minorities, to be prepared for adult health care, further education, employment, and independent living. NCBW-PGCMD has partnered with the National Congress of Black Women’s Culture of People with Disabilities Committee (condition specific awareness and training, such as autism, allergies, PTSD), and Family Voices, a network of family organizations across the United States that provide support to families of children and youth with special health care needs, their providers and professional organizations.

VOTER INITIATIVE In partnership with Prince George’s County’s and Maryland’s Board of Elections, PGC NCBW has participated in voter registration drives, including but not limited to community fairs/events; school/college resource fairs; and a senior citizen assisted living center. In addition, NCBW-PGCMD have partnered with the Prince George’s County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Capitol Heights Town Administrator to serve as moderators and facilitators for local candidate forums.
