About this event

  • 2 days 7 hours

Inside the course of time-limited or long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, the phase of termination is crucial for the successful completion of treatment, as well as for the therapeutic work in the latter aspects of the treatment. Because of the mobilization of complex feelings about prior losses in separations, the phase of termination is a point of risk and anxiety for therapist and patient alike.

In this three day immersion course, Dr. Allan Abbass, with commentary by Tami Chelew and Matt Jarvinen, will review the process of termination inside of two time-limited treatment courses of ISTDP for personality disorders, and one long-term course of ISTDP for a person with severe personality dysfunction.

The main objectives of this course include the following:

  • Describe the core metapsychology of attachment and attachment trauma in ISTDP.
  • Name the different discharge pathways of unconscious, anxiety, and the emotions that are correlated with these pathways.
  • Describe the treatment phases in short- and long-term ISTDP treatment.
  • Explain separation reactions in termination, including anxiety, manifesting in new channels, suicidal ideation, and other reactions inside of time-limited course with patients with severe personality disorders.
  • Describe processes, including guilt immersion, anxiety regulation, dealing with fragmentation to handle termination reactions in fragile patients.
  • Describe the latter phases of working through to termination in a long-term ISTDP case
  • Describe the evidence base for ISTDP for complex and refractory patient populations

Reduced rates are available for group registrations and those in certain lower income countries. Email for details.
