Join Niké and Jacint, authors of Short Walks in the Surrey Hills (and many others) for a fantastic day out in the lush Surrey Hills.

The route

Distance: 14km

Time: 5hr(approx.)

Total ascent/descent: 365m

Start: Guildford Town Bridge (by the The White House pub)

You will be experiencing some of the history and nature around the beautiful town of Guildford that lies in the heart of the Surrey Hills. Along the walk you can find out more about how guidebooks are made if you are interested.

Walk leaders: Jacint Mig and Niké Werstroh

We will visit the ruins of St Catherin's Chapel overlooking the town with great views before continuing through paths in the Chantry Woods and onto St Martha's Hill with its church and churchyard for one of the best views in the Surrey Hills. We will also walk through the must see Chilworth gunpowder mills before returning to the centre of Guildford.

Parking: Parking is available at Portsmouth Road car park, Millbrook car park or at Farnborough Road car park. Both are really close to our start point. The train and bus stations are only 5min walk away too. Toilets are only available in town at the start and at Shalford Park which is about 1hr into the walk.

Who is it for

Everyone is welcome on our walk with a reasonable fitness level. There are some moderate ascents and descents on the walk, but we won't be leaving anyone behind. If you have any health issues we need to know about, please let us know before we start the walk.

What to bring

  • It is a fairly long walk so make sure you bring picnic lunch, snacks and at least 1.5l of water. There aren't any shops along the way once we left the town.
  • Make sure you wear adequate comfortable walking shoes/boots for the day.
  • We are of course hoping for stunning sunny weather on the day with no mud underfoot, but we have to be prepared for any weather, so please bring a waterproof jacket and an extra layer.
  • Sun cream and a hat are highly advised.
  • Well behaved dogs on a leash are welcome on this walk.
