Natural Dyes Class - Rainbow Tie Dye

Bio: Susanna Taylor has worked in the world of NYC fashion as a designer, stylist and seamstress, and studied natural dyes deep in the Amazon jungle, in Oaxaca, Mexico and right in New York City. She firmly believes that you don't need to sacrifice beauty to do right by the earth and she has made it her mission to showcase this through her company Earthen Warrior.

Earthen Warrior

September 17th from 7-8:30 pm In this class you will learn how to dye fabric using natural textiles and natural dyes. We will use flowers, roots, leaves, exotic dyes, medicinal plants and even food waste to make a vibrant rainbow of natural color on a cotton scarf. You will learn some simple shibori techniques (Japanese art of folding and dyeing) and the classic tie-dye swirl to make beautiful patterns on your fabric. You will be provided with test strips of different fabrics to experiment with color. You may also bring an item of clothing that you want to dye, perhaps something that is stained or needs new life breathed into it. It must be a natural fiber, as polyester doesn’t take up natural dye. You will learn how to make your own dye pot at home and you will leave with a new understanding of the clothes we wear and the power of the natural world. In this class you will learn:
-which fabrics to use for natural dyeing
-how to prepare fabric for dyeing
-how to make a natural dye bath
-about different botanicals that can give you a rainbow of color!
-how to care for your naturally dyed textiles
-about sustainable fashion
-and much more!
 
 Bring to class if you wish:
-you can bring an item of clothing or textile of your own to dye in addition to the provided organic cotton tee
-notebook and pen for taking notes
-container to take home any leftover dye bath if you want (water bottle etc)
