About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

When the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres decided to paint Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806, it was his chance to not only impress the most powerful person in France, but also capture his influence on the fine arts, decorative arts, fashion, and taste. What makes this painting one of art history's all-time master pieces despite the fact that it was ultimately determined to not be suitable for the Emperor? It's time to uncover how this work captured the essence of Napoleon's era on canvas like never before (and never again).

Join New York Adventure Club for a deep dive exploration of artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingresone's "Napoleon I on his Imperial Throne" — one of the art world's most exquisite pieces that perfectly exemplifies Napoleon Bonaparte's reign in the post French Revolution era.

Led by art historian, museum guide, and New York Adventure Club lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this digital showcase of one of Ingres’ best known paintings will include:

  • An introduction to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte including his persona, myth and accomplishments
  • The art historical changes that took place after the Court of Versailles
  • The life and work of the French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres
  • The art that Napoleon loved (and stole) throughout Europe, as well as the emblems Napoleon himself adopted to give legacy to his rule
  • The symbolism and iconography used in European art throughout the ages to describe rulers — and how they were used by Ingres in "Napoleon I on his Imperial Throne"
  • The power of political iconography

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
