Course Description: Nannies are responsible for some of the most important people in our lives, our children. They come to the job with love for children, but often, they are missing some of the important skills needed to ensure that our children are safe, healthy, and developing to the best of their ability. Nannies play an important role in helping our children reach their fullest potential, promoting confidence and healthy life practices. This non-credit course was developed to provide guidelines and best practices for Nannies and Au Pairs of children ages 5-14 years. The course will include a lot of interactions with peers, information about child development, childhood illnesses, managing behavior, improving time management, improving communication with children, and a host of other important practices to give nannies the support they need to manage children.

The course has eight major objectives that include:

  • Educating nannies to understand child development and the behaviors of children at designated ages to help them understand and support proper child development.
  • Educating nannies about the importance of safety and using safety practices to protect children.
  • Empowering nannies to help children build character and confidence
  • Helping nannies manage behavior and promote positive behavior in school
  • Helping nannies manage the day-to-day activities of the children they support
  • Helping nannies use the most effective communication tools when talking with children and parents
  • Helping nannies recognize some of the most common childhood diseases
  • Helping nannies understand some common mental health challenges for children

Credentials Earned: A certificate from the University of the District of Columbia will be offered after completion of the course. This course fee of $125.00 is payable by money order to the "University of the District of Columbia," and includes direct instruction and the proctored examination.
