Friends of Rescue (FOR) is a 100% volunteer group formed in 2009 on a mission to help the animals of North Alabama.

Friends of Rescue's mission is to protect and advocate for companion animals in need and to build a humane community that values the lives of companion animals, promotes compassion, and seeks to strengthen the human-animal bond while also reducing the number of homeless and neglected animals.

The goal of Friends of Rescue is to end the suffering of unwanted animals in North Alabama by providing quality medical care, interactive foster care in a home environment, training, and committed forever homes. While the collective mission is to save the lives of unwanted animals in North Alabama, Friends of Rescue also strives to empower individuals who want to make a difference in the world of animal neglect, overpopulation, and abandonment. All of the animals in the care of Friends of Rescue are placed in foster homes where they learn to be part of a family; Friends of Rescue does not have a corporate housing facility for the animals in foster care. Volunteers are provided with the resources needed to fulfill their desire to rescue. Their decision to nurture and care for the animals that they chose to foster, until adoption, is the key to Friends of Rescue's success.

Each year Friends of Rescue volunteers help hundreds of dogs and cats take the first steps toward new lives of health and happiness as foster animals. This commitment to improve lives is not taken lightly! Each animal that enters the Friends of Rescue program receives medical care including, but not limited to, age-appropriate vaccinations, reproductive alteration surgery, microchipping, and examination and care to address any existing medical issues. These animals also receive training to prevent or correct behavioral issues so their transition into an adoptive home is as seamless as possible.

The commitment to improve the lives of the animals in the Friends of Rescue foster program and place these cats and dogs in the best adoptive homes possible is unwavering, but this commitment does come at a cost. On average, each adult animal that enters the Friends of Rescue program requires a $150 financial commitment and each kitten or puppy requires a $100 commitment. But the care provided is not limited to “standard” needs, nor are rescue efforts limited to animals that will be adopted quickly, are in perfect health, or are in the dawn or prime of life. Friends of Rescue often accept animals that others consider unadoptable- senior pets, pets with difficult, but correctable, behavioral issues, and animals with medical conditions such as heartworm disease, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), limb amputation, and so on. Friends of Rescue believes that everyone deserves a chance at the best life possible! To learn more about Friends of Rescue and local rescue efforts, please visit FORrescue.net.
