Welcome to our masterclass on Hindustani Vocal Music, where you will delve into the rich and intricate world of Indian classical music. This masterclass is designed to help you master the nuances of Hindustani vocal techniques and explore the diverse forms of Indian music, including Khayal, Thumri, Tappa, Kajri, and Bhajan. This workshop will be led by eminent Vocalist Diotima Mallick along with Jagjit Singh on Tabla

In this masterclass, you will start with foundational voice techniques essential for any vocalist. We will cover breath control, voice modulation, and the importance of Sargam (solfège) practice. Through dedicated exercises and personalized feedback, you will develop a strong and flexible voice capable of expressing the subtle emotions and complex rhythms characteristic of Hindustani music.

You will then journey through various forms of Hindustani vocal music, beginning with Khayal, the most popular and versatile form. Khayal allows for extensive improvisation and showcases the singer's creativity and skill. Next, you will explore the romantic and devotional Thumri, known for its lyrical beauty and emotional depth. Tappa will introduce you to fast-paced, intricate note patterns, while Kajri will immerse you in the folk essence during the monsoon time. Finally, Bhajan will connect you to the spiritual and devotional aspects of Indian music.
