Mushroom Log Inoculation Workshop

Founded by USDA botanist James A. Duke and his wife Peggy in 1997, The Green Farmacy Garden (GFG) is now owned and operated by theCommunity Ecology Institute(CEI).  Located in Fulton, MD, GFG is a sanctuary for approximately 300 native and non-native species of plants that have been used traditionally and/or researched for medicinal applications. The Dukes collected medicinal plants for over sixty years, and in 1997, they transformed part of their pasture land into a teaching garden. Organized in plots that echo chapters of Jim’s book,The Green Pharmacy,the Garden highlights medicinal plants of global herbal traditions.The Green Farmacy Garden is also a part of the United Plant Savers network of sanctuaries around the country, which strive to educate the public and maintain native plant species that have become at risk or endangered.The garden and grounds are accessible to the public only by event registration or private appointment. Foraging and Interdependence

Learn skills to meet food, health, construction and other needs through respectful, reponsible relationship with the lands you walk and her inhabitants

Learn about functional mushrooms' complete life cycle; how they grow through their food source and what conditions signal them to produce mushrooms for bridging the gap to the next island of food. Participants in this workshop will each inoculate a beech log sourced onsite with Shiitake plug spawn, and take it home to incubate, fruit, and harvest.Michael Weese, a well known local mycologist, forager, and consultant, hopes to support you in discovering how much you love mushrooms. His extensive knowledge of the natural and biological world from the macro to the micro is sure to inspire wonder in those who share space with him. 28 years into Michael’s journey through the 5th, his passion and commitment to his profession and nature show no signs of slowing down. This event will run outdoors if weather permits, and indoors if necessary. Please dress for the weather, and bring hearing protection if you have it, in case of indoor power tool use.
