Description

The Museums & Race 2016 Gathering will offer a comfortable and welcoming environment where participants - both people of color and white people - can engage in dialogue about race and museums as well as find space to strategize, recharge, and enter into self-reflection.

The Museums & Race 2016 Gathering is a direct result of the Museums & Race 2016 convening in Chicago where participants expressed interest in extending the exchange and dialogue to involve a broader group of museum workers and leaders. The Gathering will be an opportunity to explore the ways oppression, privilege, self-care for people of color, and intersectionality should be addressed in museums. (For more on these concepts and how they are being used, please read the Museums & Race 2016 Statement of Purpose.) It will feature a series of facilitated sessions (pre-registration is recommended), as well as a drop-in lounge area with resources and activities.

Registration Update: We will have a registration table open at noon. Please use this table as your first point of entry even if you have already pre-registered. Once you check in we can mark your name off our registration list and also keep track of people who walk up who have not pre-registered.

Registering for Sessions Update: Check in on time to sessions you pre-registered for. For some sessions, the first few minutes are very important for providing context. After 10 min. if there are chairs free then we would like to give those who are waiting in line to be admitted the chance to take those spaces, even if they are not pre-registered. Nonetheless, we know that this will be a busy week and some attendees may still arrive late to their sessions. If this happens to you, please check in with us at our registration table if you are running over 10 minutes late. We promise we will do our best to get you into the Session!

Transformation Lounge

The Museums & Race Transformation Lounge is an informal gathering space where participants will:
- Find resources, allies, ideas
- Share experiences, questions, strategies
- Leave stronger, supported, more connected
Partners including #MuseumsRespondtoFerguson, Visitors of Color and more have prepared activities and dialogue stations that we know will creatively catalyze exchange and conversation. Follow Brown Girls Museum Blog, The Incluseum and Museums and Race on twitter for live tweeting from the Transformation Lounge!
