New Chamber Ballet and the Variant 6 vocal ensemble invite you to the New York premiere of Miro Magloire's ballet Munu Munu, set to medieval and contemporary vocal music.800 years separate the music of contemporary composer Toby Twining from his medieval colleagues Jacopo di Bologna, Grimace, and Solage. And yet they share many traits, in particular a fascination with complex rhythms.In Miro Magloire's ballet Munu Munu (named after one of the vocal works,) the choreography adds its own rhythmic counterpoint. At times the entire stage is like a kaleidoscopic clockwork of overlapping and interlacing beats with a distinctly ritualistic feel - an experience enhanced by New Chamber Ballet's signature, in-the-round style in which the audience is seated on all sides of the stage.Munu Munu received its world premiere in Philadelphia in 2020, and is now seen in NYC for the first time.The performance will open with Deep Breath, an intense, breathless duet to a commissioned score by up-and-coming composer Elizabeth Gartman inspired by the physicality of singing. The performance will be 65 minutes, with a brief pause but no intermission. Tickets must be purchased in advance.Performers include the dancers Anabel Alpert, Megan Foley, Nicole McGinnis, Amber Neff, and Rachele Perla; the singers Jessica Beebe, Rebecca Myers, Nickolas Karageorgiou, James Reese, and Daniel Schwartz; and Doori Na, violin, and Melody Fader, piano."It's heartening to see work so focused on the meeting of dance and music." -Alastair Macaulay, The New York TimesIn accordance with the performance venue's rules, audience members must show proof of vaccination to enter the venue, and wear a mask at all times while inside the building.
