New Technologies in Film Transfer and Media Archiving

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

For over 100 years color imaging has been based around red, blue, and green primary base colors. But three colors don’t capture all of the information recorded on color motion picture film. Over the past decade discussion has focused on capturing images with more than three color primaries. Media archive technology guru Jim (James A.) Lindner, creator of the SAMMA JPEG2000 lossless archival video encoder, has fashioned a multispectral film scanner that captures images with 10 frequencies, covering the entire human-visible light spectrum. Jim will present on the basics of multispectral imaging, its application to film scanning, and the challenges of viewing, editing, and monitoring in a new proposed paradigm of content creation and media flow. Mr. Lindner is an internationally respected authority on preservation and migration of electronic media. Jim pioneered many now standardized techniques for videotape restoration and archiving to file workflows through his writings and lectures over the past 35 years. While Jim’s first claim to fame was as a filmmaker, he continued his career by pioneering work in computer animation and later media preservation, while serving on a variety of international media-associated boards and organizations promoting the art and science. Most recently, Jim has founded Filmic Technologies: Design of products for mass migration and digital preservation, including EZ16 and EZ35 technology for speed and dramatic cost reduction. Filmic is developing a multi-spectral film scanner, capable of preservation quality at a gigapixel per frame with 160 bits of color metadata.Media, broadcast, archiving, and film entertainment colleagues; or those just technically curious about this fascinating subject welcome to join us. SMPTE membership not required. AWS (Amazon Web Services) will be hosting the event at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202. This is 2 blocks SE of Crystal City Metro.
