About this event

  • 2 hours

The third day of the 3rd annual California State Parks Week features the theme "Support Climate Resilience". For this theme, we are conducting an iNaturalist BioBlitz and two biodiversity hikes. This is the afternoon hike.

On this 1.7-mile hike through oak woodland, coastal scrub, and redwood forest, we will explore the biodiversity of Mount Tamalpais State Park while collecting media that can later be uploaded to iNaturalist as data for the BioBlitz. Tips for iNaturalist and information on what other activities can support Mt Tam's climate resilience will be part of the experience. (Please note that the morning and afternoon hikes will follow different routes.)

Please download the iNaturalist app before coming to the park, where there is limited connectivity. Participants on the hike should wear shoes and clothing suitable for hiking on uneven terrain with some steep descents and climbs. They are also recommended to have sun protection, water, snacks, and an extra layer (in case of chilly afternoon breezes). There is no fee to participate, but there is an $8 per vehicle fee to park at Pantoll. The Pantoll Campground can also be accessed by Marin Transit's Stagecoach Route 61 bus.

If you can't join the hike, the BioBlitz will be active all day and for the rest of State Parks Week (through the weekend). Any iNaturalist observations made in Mount Tamalpais State Park during the event will contribute to its content. BioBlitzes can provide scientists researching the effects of climate change with valuable and otherwise difficult to obtain data. Why not combine a fun, scenic hike with a little support for climate resilience? The BioBlitz event can be found on iNaturalist.
