MSB Studio Night (May 3rd)

Hi! MSB Studio Nights is a free event series hosted by the Museum of Southwestern Biology. We want to invite more people to see and get to know our collections, especially as an artistic resource.

On May 3rd from 6 to 9 pm, we'll be bringing out our coolest specimens to be displayed still-life style in The Natural History Science Center (on UNM Main campus). We invite you to bring your own art supplies, any medium, and show us your skills! This event requires prior RSVP.

Studio Night is a free event, though donations through our Giving Page help us to keep public programs affordable for all.

1) What time is the event?

May 3rd, from 6 to 9pm on UNM main campus

2) Where is the event?

The Natural History Science Center (NHSC) is a new building on UNM Main Campus between Castetter Hall and Centennial Library. On most campus maps, the building is still listed as The Biology Annex (Apple and Google maps will take you to the right building if you select Biology Annex).

3) Where can I park?

If you have a UNM parking pass, look into the UNM PATS 3:45 Rule that will let you park in a few nearby parking lots. If not, there is pay station parking out front the UNM Communications and Journalism building or structure parking in the Cornell Parking Structure near Popejoy Hall. There are also accessible parking spots behind and beside Castetter Hall. If you're biking, the nearest racks are by Logan Hall, or you're more than welcome to bring your bike inside.

4) Can I get there on public transit?

Yes! Central Albuquerque has a vast bus network, most of which is completely fare-free. We recommend getting off at either the UNM/CNM or UNM/Popejoy stops of the ART Line, or Yale/Central on the ABQ RIDE Line. Plan your ride here.

5 ) Are minors welcome?

Yes, ages 10 and over are welcome to come! We do ask that minors be accompanied by a caretaker at all times. Please reserve a ticket for each individual attending, including children.

6) What should I bring?

Yourself! And art supplies of your choice. We recommend dry methods for the sake of the specimens, but we can set up separate stations for those using wet mediums like watercolors. We do have to keep food and drink (other than water) out of the studio, though the hallway or the porch are available for snacking.

7) How do I get my work featured after Studio Night?

When you arrive, we'll have Art ID Cards for you to fill out and keep at your station. This way, any photos of your work will have your info in frame for us to credit you later. If you would prefer we not take photos or share your work, you can indicate that on you Art ID Card.

If you'd like a better shot at your art being used for future promotional purposes, think solid lines, hard edges, and flat colored paper (the easier to remove the background, the simpler life is for our outreach coordinator).

8) Is the building accessible?

NHSC was recently renovated in 2022 and is up to current ADA code. The main entrance is equipped with a low ramp, both men's and women's and unisex restrooms have an accessible stall, and all chairs and tables in the studio are on wheels for easy rearranging.
