Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.It's a day to remember the struggles that our forefathers and mothers faced. It highlights the survival instinct and the ways in which we as a community create something from nothing. It's all about self-determination and optimism. During our Juneteenth Freedom Celebration we pay homage to Gullah native Robert Smalls nicknamed The Man of Action due to his ambition, intelligence, rebellion over oppression, and leading his family and at least 12 other slaves to freedom. He was the first Black Naval ship captain in history, politician, and served his community until his death in 1915 at the age of 75. We honor his legacy in our shared hometown, Beaufort South Carolina.
