A Family/Systemic Constellation Workshop

Our issues are often multi-layered and multi-dimensional. We now know from recent studies of epigenetics that the experiences, both positive and traumatic, of our ancestors impact our physical and mental well-being. Bert Hellinger, who pioneered this work, recognized that besides an individual soul, we all also participate in a family soul and field, which includes a much larger picture of the soul than we usually recognize. The family soul includes the reality and experiences of our ancestors, great-grandparents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, previous partners of our parents, our parents, siblings (dead and alive), and those bound to our family members through intense fateful experiences, such as murder and war. Everything that has been experienced in your family is alive in this family soul and transcends the limits of space and time we experience in a physical body.

By including this larger "family soul" we include a larger frame, we acknowledge that on an unconscious level, we are impacted by things outside of the normal biographical narrative that we find emphasized in psychotherapy and pop psychology. The bonds of life are strong and run far back in time. As small children, we sense this great love and debt to the source of our life and are unconsciously connected to our family soul. Out of this blind love, we can become entangled in issues that don't belong to us but to those who came before. Through the practice of Family and Systemic Constellations we are able to find clarity, revelation, and freedom from these unconscious entanglements. By widening our view of the origin of the issue, we can also find a resolution by including all those involved.

Through this deep work, the soul moves out of the places where it gets stuck. We can move beyond the normal narratives we create about the different circumstances of our lives and actually "see" the fullness of the issue. These linear/ cause-and-effect stories can trap the soul when they are too narrow to encompass the larger truths of the systems we are embedded in. Even when we feel stuck, seeing the reality of what actually "is" often allows for a natural movement towards coherence and harmony within the individual and family soul.

The People & The Process

Trained facilitators lead constellations in group and individual settings. People or objects are used to “represent” the relevant elements in the client’s system, such as father, mother, boss, coworker, etc. The client chooses representatives and places them based on a felt sense of where they are in relationship to each other. The facilitator then asks the representatives to report on their experience in terms of body sensations, reoccurring thoughts, and emotions. If objects are used, the facilitator may feel each object to sense these qualities. Through this process, the disruptions or dis-ease in the system come to light along with new opportunities for healing. The facilitator gently guides the movements of the representatives and suggests healing statements to help shift the system into a more harmonious alignment.

Constellations take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours. As a witness to the constellation, the client can see their internalized experience externalized. This alone often yields new awareness that is not possible through conscious thought. Constellations often open up movement in places that have been stuck, such as letting go of an old family pattern, revealing the true motivations of an action, or releasing energy around a chronic issue. The healing that emerges may ripple over days and weeks as the changes in the constellation integrate into the client’s life and system.

Being a representative in a constellation has its benefits. Once a representative has been placed in a constellation, they pay attention to their body’s sensations. The process unfolds quite naturally, and there is no role-playing involved. Representing connects people with subtle energies that help expand their experience of humanity and give them a unique sense of connection as they participate in another’s healing process. Everyone can tap into this intuitive and mediumistic capacity; we call the type of perception experienced "representative perception." People often describe attending a workshop as a mystical experience.

Family and Systemic Constellations can guide and heal the inner dynamics of your psyche, romantic relationships, inherited family trauma, questions of vocation, financial issues, organizational dysfunctions, the natural world, and collective issues. Systemic Constellations make that which can't be seen visible, and what has been forgotten is remembered.
